If there's 1 thing that’s helped me clear my energy blocks, get un-stuck and generally transform my life, it's Kundalini Yoga.
Have I done a certified training in this practice, dedicate two and half hours a day to it, chant, or wear a white turban? Gosh, no.
And neither do you, to unlock your flow, tap into your infinite potential and start feeling the lightness-of-being benefits of this particular type of yoga.
What Is Kundalini Yoga?
Kundalini Yoga has been practiced for thousands of years in the East and was brought to the West, in 1969 by Yogi Bhajan.
It began gaining visibility in the 1990’s when he began teaching the Aquarian Sādhanā “to help us householders thrive and remain balanced in a world with ever-increasing information, technology, and sources of stress and pressure”.
Kundalini is said to be the energy of our soul and refers to the creative and spiritual power that sits coils at the base of our spine.
And believe it or not, we all have it.
Imagine it, like a coiled serpent lying asleep at the base of your spine, waiting to be tapped into and Kundalini Yoga is what will do it.
Benefits of Kundalini Yoga
This style of yoga is a practice of different “kriyas”, which are a specific set of exercises that:
- Work through our chakras to strengthen the nervous system
- Activate the glandular system
- Purify the body and calm the mind
When the energies of our glandular and nervous system combine in this way it is said to create a movement or flow in the spinal fluid that we can feel “rising” up through our bodies.
The Psychology of Kundalini Yoga & What a Class Feels Like
Ok, I know, this is still sounding a little “out-there”.
Let me try to describe what goes down for me in just one less-than-30 minutes online class with Gloria Latham.
One of my favorite Kundalini teachers, who is also a Lululemon Global Ambassador, and founder of Semperviva Yoga Studios.
In between short chants, breath-work, and sets of physical exercises that have the knack of swinging, swaying and shaking what I refer to as the “oo-ghies” (any pent-up emotions I’m currently feeling) right out of my system.
Gloria gently but consistently asks questions like:
“What are your dreams and goals? Who do you want to be?”
She directs you to drop your stories of why you can’t, to breathe the fear right out of your body and to move towards trusting that you have everything you need inside you.
She encourages you to be doing something every day to move you toward your dreams.
While declaring that the trembling and burning you feel in the pit of your belly while raising your legs, arms, head and shoulders off the floor for what feels like forever, is the same fire in your gut that will have you take action on your dreams!
During her classes I feel:
- Tension evaporate
- Stuck-ness dissipate
- Lightness and clarity of mind descend
- My intuition awakens, and I feel a peaceful yet kick-butt energy of possibility and in flow with what is.
