Age Better with Healthy Eating

1. Eating a varied and balanced diet while staying hydrated

Eating well means eating a variety of fruits, vegetables, and grains along with finding balance with other types of foods. Variety is key! Every colour represents the different nutrients present in each food - bringing your body what it needs for the long-term. Here are some of our favourite recipes.

Hydration helps the body with most of its functions, making taking in liquids such as water, teas, soups and stews a great way to maintain health.

Beyond eating well, is there a Juice Plus+ capsule that supports a varied and balanced diet towards ageing well? Yes, Juice Plus+ Essentials Omega+ Blend supports ageing happily and with grace!

What makes Juice Plus+ Essentials Omega+ Blend Capsules different from other omega fatty acid supplements found in the marketplace?

Omega+ Blend are different because they are 100% vegan. Plus, they “blend” together additional nutrients that cannot be found in most other omega -3 fatty acid supplements. Our ethos as a company includes sourcing nutrition from plant-based and sustainable sources. See the key nutritional sources below.

Omega+ Blend Key Nutritional Sources:

  • Omega 3 fatty acids are sourced from algae (not fish).
  • Omegas 7 & 9 are sourced from sea buckthorn berries and safflower seed oil.
  • Vitamin D is sourced from algae.
  • Zinc is sourced from the earth.
  • Lutein is sourced from marigold flowers.
  • Lycopene is sourced from tomatoes.

These capsules while being vegan are also dairy-free and gluten-free, and they contain no artificial colours or flavours. Since there are no fish oils, the capsules have no fishy taste or smell. And if you are a nutrition geek, you’ll be happy to know these capsules contain pre-formed EPA and DHA (unlike flax, chia, and hemp oils.)

Juice Plus+ Essentials Omega+ Blend Capsules help you to get meaningful amounts of key nutrients into your daily diet, helping you to age happy.

Age Gracefully with Physical Activity

2. Exercising, stretching, and moving your body most days

While ageing is a natural process in the body, if you don’t move it, you lose it!

When we move, it is like an internal massage for our body. Movement brings circulation to our muscles, joints, bones, and fascia, and keeps the blood moving (not stagnant).

If you haven’t thought about this before, imagine your blood circulating and going through your body as you move, e.g. walking through the park.

Did you know…

  • Blood carries nutrition and oxygen to your tissues and organs.
  • Our blood keeps us warm and also helps to cool us off when needed.
  • As blood moves through the body, it gets rid of our waste products.
  • Blood helps to fight infections.

So, perhaps now you have a different picture in mind about why keeping our body moving and the blood circulating throughout is soooo important to staying healthy.

5 Simple Ways to Add Movement to Your Day

  • You don’t have to hit the gym or even be completely mobile to add gentle movement into your day.
  • Wake up and stretch (shake out arms and legs plus do a few side bends, forward bends and gentle twists to each side.)
  • Do little squats while brushing your teeth.
  • Walk after a meal for 10-15 minutes.
  • At the desk, do shoulder rolls, turn your head one way and then the other way, reach arms and stretch, stand up and stretch legs walking around for 2-5 minutes.
  • Before bed, roll around on the floor and move in any way that feels good to your body. This relieves tension before hopping in to rest for the evening.

Get Your Beauty Sleep

3. Getting enough restful sleep

Scientists are trying to get to the nitty gritty about why we as humans need to sleep so much. But for now, what we do know is when we don’t get enough sleep, it is detrimental to our health. There is something called sleep torture after all!

Getting “enough” sleep depends on your age and situation or condition. Children and teens sleep more than adults, but the elderly need a lot less sleep than other adults. Sleep requirements also change depending on your situation or condition (consider that these situations may require more/less sleep: pregnancy, heavy sports training, certain illnesses, and conditions).

According to the NHS in the UK, on average:

  • adults need 7 to 9 hours
  • children need 9 to 13 hours
  • toddlers and babies need 12 to 17 hours

Are You Getting Enough Restful Sleep? Here’s a Quick Check-In:

  • Do you wake up feeling groggy?
  • Do you need coffee or tea to get you through the day?
  • Do you tend to drink wine or other alcoholic beverages to get you through the dinner and cleanup routine?
  • Do you feel wired at the end of the day and unable to settle into sleep easily?

If you answered yes to most of these, it could be possible that you need either more sleep OR a bit of restful recuperation throughout your day. Consider practising some sleep hygiene techniques as recommended by the Mental Health Foundation UK website.

Keep Your Mind Healthy with Meditation and Breath-work

4. Practicing meditation and breathwork

Mental health is at the forefront. There are two great ways to support your mental and emotional health. They are 1. meditation and 2. breathwork.

How to Practice Meditation and Mindfulness

Most of us have the idea that meditation means having one thought or no thoughts at all. This makes meditation seem impossible. Thinking this way means… we are missing the point of meditation.

The idea of meditation is to connect to yourself with your body and mind, and watch all the thoughts that you are having. AND THEN start practising how to slow the thoughts down and work towards focusing on one single thought or thing. The point is the PRACTICE, not necessarily achieving having no thoughts at all. The more you practice slowing down the thoughts, the better your mind is at getting there. The net result is feeling calmer, better ability to cope with stress and improved quality of life according to Age UK. Achieving better mental health just got easier!

Mindful Breathing

Breathing is something we do every day unconsciously, but do you know what the quality of your breath is? Most often when we are going through our day a bit stressed, we start breathing only into our lungs, from the chest up. When we are relaxed and calm, we breath into our diaphragm (below the ribs) and belly area. Breathing into the lungs, diaphragm and belly space is the most efficient way to take in oxygen to our body – making us feel great.

Practising breathwork means shifting from unconscious breathing to having control of the breath for a certain amount of time. Here are a few ways to practice breathwork on your own.

  • Box Breathing
    • Find a comfortable seat, let your shoulders relax away from the ears. Check in to see how you feel before the breathwork.
    • Breath in for a count of 4, hold for 4.
    • Breathe out for the count of 4 and hold for the count of 4.
    • Continue for a few minutes. Stop and come to a normal natural breath and take a moment to reflect on how you feel.

  • Blowing the “candle” flame
    • Find a comfortable seat, let your shoulders relax away from the ears.
    • Check in to see how you feel before the breathwork.
    • Inhale softly for the count of 4.
    • Exhale super, super slowly to the count of 6. The exhale is longer than the inhale.
    • Inhale for 4.
    • Exhale for 6, and pretend like you are blowing a birthday candle, but you don’t want to blow it out. You want the candle flame to flicker… not go out.
    • Continue, the inhale for 4 and long exhale for 6 for about 2 minutes.
    • Afterwards, stop and come to a normal and natural breath.
    • Check in, how do you feel?
