A Busybody’s Guide to On-the-Go Fitness

Trying to commit to an active lifestyle but have no time to spare? If a trip to the gym doesn’t fit in your schedule, have no fear—a busy body can also be an active body! There are tons of options for the overbooked to stay active on-the-go. A few tiny changes to your daily life can make a world of difference.

The 10-Minute Workout
You don’t need to go to an hour-long yoga class or run a 5K every day to stay fit. Taking just 10 minutes out of your daily schedule for a quick routine can keep you active and healthy. If finding time to exercise is difficult, you’re not alone—even Olympian Shannon Miller struggles to fit a long workout into her daily routine.

“People are always surprised that I don’t do four-hour sweat sessions, or even two-hour sweat sessions,” Miller said to Huffington Post. “I don’t have that kind of time and I don’t know many people who do. For me, it’s fitting it in.”

A busy mom and businesswoman, Miller fits this 10-minute workout in wherever she can during the week. If you’re strapped for time, try fitting her workout into your lunch break or even while you’re preparing a family dinner. According to Miller, “It’s about really focusing on those baby steps.”

Not sure what baby steps to take? Here are our favorite ways to fit exercise into your hectic schedule:

  • Park Farther Away. Whether you’re running errands or heading to work, a brisk walk is a quick and easy way to add some exercise into your routine. Instead of scouting out the perfect front-row parking spot, try parking at the back of the lot. The few extra steps you take at each destination will add up!
  • Take the Stairs: This one is simple—skip the elevator and take the stairs! Get your heart rate up by climbing a few flights each day at work or at home. Encourage your friends and family to do the same; they’ll be good company for the climb. Plus, you’ll also be saving energy and encouraging sustainable choices.
  • Turn Playtime into Workout Time: If you’re a parent, turn a trip to the park or a playdate outside into a fun fitness class for you and the kids! Take on the role of fitness instructor by leading your family or friends through a series of fun yoga poses.
