Golfers: Eat Right to Hit Your Hole in One

Calling all golfers: Dust off those golf clubs and start stretching. Golf season is here!

Golf becomes increasingly more competitive at every level. Good nutrition and proper hydration is important to maximize your performance. Want to play like the professionals competing in the big golf tournament this week? It’ll take more than just hard work and practice. Optimum performance on the golf course not only requires proper skills, but sound nutritional habits to keep your body fueled and working hard.

Whether you’re an amateur golfer or a pro, here are some helpful tips to improve your nutrition for golf performance and successfully make it through all 18 holes, and 27,000 feet of terrain.

Before You Hit the Course. Before teeing off, be sure to preload with a meal about three hours before practice or play. A nutritious and satisfying pre-game meal should be high in carbohydrates, moderate in protein and low in fat.  Examples of  pre-game meals include whole wheat pasta with meat sauce, a grilled chicken sandwich with soup, or an omelet and toast. You can also try Juice Plus+ Complete shakes for balanced nutrition before or after your golf game.

On the Course. Over the course of four to five hours of play, your body will need energy to refuel and continue playing strong. Carry healthy snacks with you so you can munch as you play. Healthy and convenient options include trail mix, energy bars or dried fruit.

Stay Hydrated. Water is one of the most important nutrients in our bodies and also an important component of nutrition for golfers. The loss of as little as 16 oz. of your body’s water-weight can not only compromise your muscle performance, but your golf swing as well. To prevent this pitfall, follow these tips to stay adequately hydrated:

  • Drink 16 oz. of water one to two hours before tee time
  • While on the course, plan to drink 4 oz. to 8 oz. every 15 to 20 minutes of play.
