Putting Our Health First
It’s National Women’s Health Week! What a wonderful time to kick start a healthy lifestyle or reenergize your efforts. While my company is focused on helping women make their health a priority, it’s also something I work hard to personally practice each day. Not to say it’s easy, but it is doable. The most important thing I’ve learned over the years is to not make it too complicated. You want to enjoy life! And while being healthy helps you do that, you still need to find ways that you can focus on your health day in and day out.
Here are 7 of my favorite tips for making your health a priority:
1. Fitness. If you have time to get to a gym, it’s a great way to escape and focus on YOU. If not, a quick circuit is simple: Try while brushing your teeth, playing with your kids, a commercial break, or on a conference call. It all adds up. Also, running in place, calf raises, or squats are a great way to work your body during the day. Feel free to join me for a 10 minute workout!
2. Make your doctor’s appointment. We have so many things to juggle on a daily basis, but don’t let this slip by. Take time today to schedule your doctor or dentist appointment. Even if you feel great, you want to have those regular conversations with your healthcare provider.
3. Nutrition. I do my best to provide myself and my family with well-rounded meals. However, we all know, it’s not always perfect or easy to make these healthy meals. I took Juice Plus+ to fill the gaps during my training days, and it’s what I do now as well. I also enjoy a smoothie or Juice Plus+ Complete shake as an easy and healthy snack. The extra water is great, and you can mix in some protein too.
4. Start the day off right. When you begin the day in a hectic state, you tend to remain that way. I had personally fallen into this rut until I read multiple interviews by Tony Robbins where he discussed his 10 minute “priming” ritual. You can certainly take longer, but if you only have 10 minutes, take at least three to give gratitude, a few to focus on the inner presence of God or a higher power, and finally “three to thrive,” which are three things you want to make happen in your life. What a powerful way to start the day!
5. Remember, every moment counts. That doesn’t mean we need to be perfect, in fact we learn a lot from our mistakes. However, when we set a goal and then create a plan to achieve that goal through specific actions each day, we are making the moment count. In other words, what you do today matters.
6. Moderation. Take baby steps in your approach to a healthy lifestyle. Find those small things you can change to better your health each day, and then stick to it. Don’t try to do too much too fast; it’s a recipe for failure. Just take a steady step in the right direction each day.
7. Stretching. This is often overlooked when we work out. It is definitely one of my most challenging fitness areas. After gymnastics, I lost my flexibility VERY quickly and found myself focusing just on cardio and strength while completely ignoring stretches. This year I’m really focused on getting that flexibility back by making time throughout the day to stretch!
So often women feel guilty about taking time for ourselves, but we have to make our health a priority. We have to realize that when we are not healthy, we can’t be there for all of those who depend on us. But remember, don’t take on too much too fast. Instead focus on making one simple change. One simple change today can have a huge impact on your health down the road.
