Does traveling sabotage your healthy efforts?

When we are away from home whether it’s for business travel or holidays, our normal habits and routines disappear making it almost impossible to keep to an exercise routine and to eat healthy. Here are some things that can help support you and increase your energy while traveling.

1. Traveling West to East – Arrive during the day

Eat more high-protein, low-fat foods. Think eggs, grilled fish, yogurt, lean meats. Sleep on the plane, but once you arrive get yourself outside in the daylight.

2. Traveling East to West – Arrive at night

Stay awake on the flight! Eat more carbs… yippee!! Carbs make you sleepy. As soon as you arrive at your hotel, shower and get your but into bed!

3.    Water – drink up!

The air on the play is super dry and recycled. Drink some water before you fly and then a glass every hour as you fly. This will stop you from becoming dehydrated, which will also makes you feel very, very tired.

4. Exercise every third day

This will help you keep your fitness level in tact and your energy up.

5. Move it!

Walk around the plane every hour or two to keep your back happy, your muscles warm and your blood flowing.

6. Plan ahead

Book an emergency exit row aisle seat to get a seat with extra legroom.

7. Hide the clock

Knowing that it’s 3 a.m. and you have to get up at 6 a.m. guarantees that you won’t sleep for the remaining three hours.

8. When eating out, order without looking at the menu*

Go to a restaurant with a healthy meal in mind, like steamed vegetables or broiled chicken, and just order it. (Focus on getting your 5 servings of fruit and veg for example ;-)

9. Take Cat Naps

If you need some sleep take a nap, but limit it to 45 minutes. Longer naps leave you groggy when you wake up.

10. Get grounded

We are creatures of habit. Create mini rituals in the morning and the evening. This could be 2-5 minutes of meditation** followed by a substantial breakfast in the morning and 5-10 minutes of relaxation yoga poses in the evening followed by a relaxing herbal tea before bed.

These rituals will bring a sense of stability to the chaos of life on the road.

*My favorite tip! It really works!

** Don’t get freaked out by the word meditation… just sit quietly and pay attention to your thoughts and feelings as you wake up for a minute or two… and you have meditated ;-)

Have fun traveling!
