10 Smart Snacks When You Want to Indulge on Vacation

As the weather heats up and the vacation activities stack up, it can be harder to keep a healthy diet on track. While indulging on vacation can be a lot of fun, sometimes, you just want to fuel your body with the food you know it loves, too.

Don’t worry. You don’t have to order a sad, wilted salad from the closest burger place in order to snack smart on vacation. With a bit of planning, you can have healthy snacks on hand to save your diet and your appetite at the same time!

Each of these snacks contain the important nutrients your body needs to feel good and have fun, and even better, they’re delicious! Who says you can’t indulge and fuel your body at the same time?

Easy-to-Eat Fruits and Veggies
Pick fruits and vegetables that travel well and won’t be ruined if they get jostled quite a bit during your adventures. You can also try to bring fruits and veggies that don’t require a lot of effort to prep or clean up on the road. Here are some of our favorites:

  • Carrot sticks
  • Sugar snap peas
  • Grapes

Salty Snacks
Do you have a salty, crunchy craving that hits during road trips or when lounging by the pool? Skip the gas station run and make your own salty snacks to have on hand when the craving strikes! Try these:

  • Homemade roasted chickpeas like these are a great source of protein and will satisfy your need for crunchy/salty flavors
  • Homemade air-popped popcorn, lightly seasoned, has much less sodium and fat than premade popcorn snacks you will find at the store. Bonus: it’s easy to make a big batch, and then you can portion it out into zip lock bags ahead of time.

Sweet Snacks
Sometimes the sweet craving strikes and there’s nothing in sight but the local ice cream shop or bakery. Delicious – unless you’ve already over-indulged recently, or if you’re trying to cut down on sugar. Plan ahead and bring some sweet goodies with you:

  • Extra sweet fruits like bananas and apples if you have a good place to store them where they won’t get bruised
  • Make your own trail mix
  • Pack your Juice Plus+ chewables!

Protein Snacks
If you’re getting really hungry in between meals, it could be a sign that you’re not getting enough protein on your “vacation diet.” You’re probably not the only one! An easy fix would be to bring along quick, simple protein snacks to have on hand between meals.

Healthy snacking when you’re on vacation takes a bit of extra planning, and some days, it can be really fun to just indulge and enjoy whatever you’re in the mood to eat! But for those days when you’d like to keep your healthy lifestyle relatively on-track, especially when surrounded by fast food and airport vending machines, there are plenty of options.
