Back to Fitness Basics: 5 Achievable Fitness Goals for the New Year

It’s easy to get out the habit of exercise and healthy eating during the holiday season—that’s why many people make resolutions to go the gym and eat better. Unfortunately, only 8% of people actually achieve their resolutions. One thing that makes goals more achievable is to make them specific. Instead of promising yourself you’re going to “get in shape,” try these five resolutions instead. They’re a surefire way to you get back into the swing of a regular fitness routine.

1) I Will Try a New Sport
Novelty can help make exercise more appealing. Have you always wanted to learn how to play tennis, rock climb, or join an adult swim team? Now’s the time to investigate what’s available in your area. After you do this, make a plan. What’s your budget? Would it be more fun to exercise with a friend or do you prefer solitude when you’re breaking a sweat? Whatever makes the experience more enjoyable makes you more likely to stick with it.

2) I Will Take a Yoga Class
Fitness trends come and go, but yoga is a perennial favorite. Why is that? It helps build strength and flexibility and reduces stress. Plus, there are different kinds of yoga that range from gentle to more intense, making it easy to find a class that suits your needs.

3) I Will Run a 5K
Running a 5K is an attractive fitness goal because at a little over three miles, it’s short enough to feel attainable but long enough to be a challenge if you’ve never run a race before. At a 5K, you’ll find a mix of folks: serious runners trying to improve their previous times, newbies just like you, and even people who are walking the whole course. There are multiple plans out there for newbies to get started!

4) I Will Track My Steps
If you found a fitness tracker under the Christmas tree, or you’ve decided to buy yourself one, you may be getting excited about counting your steps. These devices provide instant feedback on how much you’re moving — which can be extremely motivating. A common goal is 10,000 steps.

5) I Will Eat Fruits & Vegetables at Every Meal
Most people fall well short of the recommended 7-13 servings of fruits and vegetables a day. One way to get yourself into the habit of eating more of these health-giving foods is to incorporate them into every meal for the month of January. If you need help bridging the gaps, there’s always Juice Plus+ capsules! Once you get used to how good it makes you feel, you may not want to stop at the end of the experiment.
