Snowed-In and Staying Healthy: How to Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle during a Winter Storm

This winter has been one for the books!  There’s already been record-breaking snowfall to-date, and with temperatures so low that even Niagara Falls is freezing over, it’s needless to say that there is concern for even more winter storms to come.  Being stuck at home due to snow and ice could be used as an excuse to crawl into bed, arms full of unhealthy food choices - don’t let it!  Take being snowed-in as a great opportunity to discover new ways to be active and healthy. Keep reading for some tips to keep up a healthy lifestyle the next time winter keeps you at home!

Stay Active Indoors

Just because you can’t drive to the gym, doesn’t mean you can’t get in a great workout at home!  There are tons of ways to turn your home into a gym- just get creative.  For example, stairs make for a great cardio workout that can be used to strengthen multiple muscle groups.  You could also set up a small circuit workout in the living room!  There’s so much you can do to get active inside; find more ideas here.

Play in the Snow

There are so many fun outdoor activities you can take part in on a snow day!  As long as it’s safe outside, there are endless ways to get your body moving right in your back yard.  You can take a walk with your family, make a snowman or even have a snowball fight.  You’ll be having so much fun, you won’t even realize you’re getting in a workout!

Stock-up on Canned Produce

Contrary to common beliefs, canned produce is just as healthy and nutritious as fresh produce- sometimes even more so!  Because canning produce allows for picking at the peak of nutrition, the fruits and vegetables have all the vitamins and minerals you need.  The canning process also makes the contents non-perishable, so they’re great to have on-hand in case the power goes out in a winter storm- just be sure to rinse them off first!  So don’t be afraid of canned produce- it’s actually ideal for this time of year!

Cook Ahead of Time

When the forecast calls for a snow day, instead of stocking up on bread and milk, buy ingredients for healthy and filling meals.  You can cook meals in large batches ahead of time to ensure that you and your family have nutritious food to eat during the snow-in.  Some great ideas are turkey chili, bean soup or a stir-fry (This website has tons of healthy stir-fry ideas).  Any healthy meal will work, as long as it makes good leftovers!

Take your Juice Plus+

A surefire way to stay healthy during a winter storm (or anytime really) is to take your Juice Plus+ Orchard, Garden and Vineyard Blend Capsules!  They’re a great way to get your full servings of fruits and vegetables for the day, even if you can’t get out of the house!
