Five Tips to Stay Active at Work

We all know the importance of living an active lifestyle. However, one of the biggest obstacles to staying active is lack of time- especially when you spend 40+ hours a week at the office. Instead of looking at your job as stagnant time, try looking at it as an opportunity to discover new ways to stay active. There are tons of tips and tricks for sprinkling in activities throughout your workday-and they can really add up! So what are you waiting for? Get to work and get active!

Invest in a Stand-Up Desk

Research shows our bodies are not designed to sit for 8+ hours a day. Not only is sitting for so many hours problematic for our activity levels, but it can lead to a multitude of other health problems, no matter how much you work out.  A stand-up desk provides one way to combat long hours in a chair. These innovative desks come in many models, all of which have countless health benefits. The basic idea is that you can perform your usual office tasks, all while standing up. Many stand-up desks even adjust in height so you can take a break and sit for a while if needed. An investment in a stand-up desk is a great investment for your health. Your body will thank you!

Switch Your Chair for a Stability Ball

If you have to sit all day, you can at least get an awesome core out of it! Sitting on an exercise ball is a really fun (and bouncy) way to stay active in the office. Balancing on a ball with no arm or back rests will force you to use your inner core to sit up straight, leading to a toned tummy and better posture. Who doesn’t want that? Plus, if you have your own office, or are feeling brave, you can use the ball for a quick set of crunches or back raises when you’re on a break!

Exercise at your Desk

Believe it or not, there are tons of toning, stretching and cardio exercises you can do right at your desk! To get your heart pumping, you can run in place or do some jumping jacks. Or, for some quick toning, tighten your abs for a few seconds. There are so many ways to get active at the office, you just need to think outside the box.  This article has plenty of ideas to get you started.

Take a Walk During Lunch

If it’s a pretty day, why not enjoy it? Instead of staying cooped up inside all day long, go outside and take a walk during your lunch break. If you bring your lunch from home, walk around and find a sunny spot to eat. Or, if you’d rather buy it, walk to the restaurant instead of driving there. If you really want to go the extra mile, bring a portable meal like a Juice Plus+ Complete Shake or a whole wheat wrap and eat on your feet! Leaving the office will not only get your body moving, but it’s a great chance to clear your head and breathe in some fresh air!

Walk Around the Office

If you’re sitting at a desk all day, make a point to get up and walk around every so often.  The change of position will do wonders for your body! Take the long way to the coffee machine, walk to your co-worker’s desk instead of emailing them or even just take a lap around your office floor. Moving regularly will mean you’re sitting less- every minute not spent in your desk chair means another minute of activity!
