Top Food Trends for 2015

2014 was a year of kale, quinoa, and coconut. Oh and who could forget the Cronut. But with a new year upon us, comes new food trends. Take a look at five of the new nutrition trends you won’t want to miss!

Transparency and Clean Labels

A picture paints a thousand words, but does food packaging need to? It’s no secret food manufacturers are increasingly highlighting foods that are “all natural” and product origins. But with growing concerns over the lack of a definition of “natural,” the need for more clarity and specific details exists. 2015 will see a continuing trend toward transparency in food labeling, reflecting a move towards clearer and simpler claims and packaging for maximum transparency.

Hybrid Veggies

Your grocery aisle is welcoming some innovative vegetables this year: The kalette, a cross between kale and Brussels sprouts, and broccoflower, a cross between broccoli and cauliflower. Though fruit blends like the pluot (plum and apricot) and tangelo (tangerine and pomelo) have been gaining popularity for a while, this is the year crossbred greens will make their way into supermarkets — and our salads.

Snacks Rise to the Occasion

With conflicting schedules and afterschool activities, sit down meals are continuing to decline in popularity and snacking is on the rise among all age groups. In particular, research shows that snacking among consumers over the age of 65 could contribute to a longer and healthier life. In 2015, Boomers will focus on snacks rich in nutrients like protein, fiber and Omega 3s that can help promote bone health. Some favorite snacks include nuts, sunflower seeds and whole grain popcorn.

Grocery Shopping Goes 24/7 Online

Online grocery shopping and delivery has become a crowded space with a host of services competing for consumer attention. 2014 was a huge year for online grocery delivery, and this food trend is only going to get bigger in 2015. Previously, major e-commerce players like Amazon would only deliver non-perishable items, but services like Peapod, Fresh Direct, Amazon Fresh and Instacart make it possible to have perishables delivered right to your front door. With this in mind, products will evolve and become catered to online shoppers. More brands will bundle multiple SKUs to create meal kits or offer pre-packaged sets of multiple products.

The Rise of Fermented Foods

2015 will be the year fermented foods like yogurt, tempeh, vinegars, and sauerkraut take center stage as people continue to look for foods to aid digestion. Increased knowledge about the impact foods have on our digestive health will lead to significant changes in the way consumers prepare food in 2015. “We saw chefs start to experiment with fermentation in 2014,” said Top Chef's Tom Colicchio, "but 2015 will be the year of fermentation. From kimchi to pickles to salumi, every restaurant will be doing some sort of in-house fermentation."
