Celebrate Men’s Health Month: 5 Tips to Improve Men’s Health

Guys, this is it! Today’s the day you’re going to take control of your health. Celebrate National Men’s Health Month by making small changes each day that will have a big impact on your health and wellbeing. So what are you waiting for? Get up, eat healthier, exercise more, and get healthy!

5 Ways for Men to Improve Their Health

  1. Schedule a checkup: Chances are you get your car tuned regularly, never skip an oil change, and keep it buffed and polished till it sparkles. But when was the last time you scheduled a checkup for yourself? When it comes to health care, men are much less likely than women to visit the doctors regularly, take symptoms seriously and live a healthy lifestyle. Which could be why women live about five years longer than men. Do yourself and your loved ones a favor and schedule a yearly checkup. Regular checkups and age-appropriate screenings CAN improve men’s health, detect early warning signs and reduce your risk of early death.
  2. Stretch, Bend, Move. Having trouble sleeping? Feeling down or anxious? Exercise not only improves overall men’s health, but has other health benefits such as improved mood and a better night’s sleep. Find a workout that you enjoy, whether it’s swimming, biking, playing sports or even working in the garden. Once you set your mind to it, it’s not that hard to incorporate physical activity into your everyday routine. About 2-1/2 hours of moderate aerobic exercise a week will make a big difference in your overall wellbeing.
  3. Follow a Healthy Diet: Your mom was right – it’s important to eat healthy meals that include plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Ditch the junk food and fuel your body with healthy foods to promote men’s health. You’ll feel better in the short term and your family will be thankful for your health and wellbeing for years to come.
  4. De-stress: The pressures of daily responsibilities can take a toll on your mental health. Too much stress over long periods of time can affect your immune system and increase your risk of developing a variety of physical problems, as well as mental health issues such as depression and mood swings. Take time to relax and de-stress each day. Whether it’s quiet meditation, reading, or playing your favorite sport, it’s important to find time – no – make time – for your favorite activities. A little fun goes a long way.
  5. Get Plenty of Rest: According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), adults generally need between seven and nine hours of sleep each night. Lack of sleep can increase your blood pressure, affect your appetite and increase your risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Get a good night’s sleep each night by sticking to a regular sleep schedule, going to bed and getting up at the same time each day. You’ll wake up feeling more refreshed and more energized to take on the day!
