Healthy Eating On the Road

Healthy Eating Anywhere and Everywhere

With unhealthy temptations all around us, healthy eating is no easy lifestyle choice to make. Eating right and following good nutrition habits at every meal takes a remarkable amount of dedication and discipline – especially as the weather is warming up and the busy spring travel  season is right around the corner. Fortunately, those foods that tempt us have healthy alternatives, so gear up for your next road trip or Spring Break celebration with these healthy travel snacks.

Healthy Eating Alternatives You Should Know

1)  The allure of candy can be one of the most difficult temptations to avoid, but you can have a sweet tooth and get your fix for sweets. Dried fruit make excellent healthy alternatives to candies, which are full of unhealthy refined sugar and lack key nutritional benefits—not to mention that refined sugar is directly linked to diabetes. Dried apricots, figs, and dates can make for excellent healthy travel snacks to help get you through your candy cravings.

2)  For the candy-lover in you that loves a bit of crunch with your sweet, try dried bananas. Dried bananas make for a crunchy, sweet, and satisfying addition to oatmeal, cereal, and in trail mix for a variety of healthy eating options. For a cracker-like crunch, try using banana chips as your healthy travel snacks with cracker toppings such as peanut butter or fruit preserves.

3)  Soda is one of the crutches of the American sugar addiction and a major challenge to overcome in any healthy eating plan. Even though diet sodas don’t add calories to the body, they still do harm by exposing the body to a myriad of artificial chemicals, such as aspartame, which is a sweetener used in some diet sodas that the body breaks down into the toxin known as formaldehyde. One of the healthy alternatives to drinking soda is to drink mineral water with lime juice, which still gives you the refreshing taste of a fizzy drink but without all of the added chemicals and empty calories in soda. For a sweeter approach, try using fresh squeezed orange juice instead.
