As a former athlete, sports medicine specialist David Phillips knows how important it is to get proper nutrition for fitness. Proper nutrition helped Dr. Phillips in his triathlon training to conquer the Ironman World Championships. With the combination of his training and his research, he was able to fully understand how nutrition affects exercise physiology.

“You can earn prestigious degrees, work in a highly respected profession, and even command the respect and admiration of your peers,” Dr. Phillips says. “But if you’re not passionate about what you’re doing every day, you’re not Living Life to the Plus+.”

In high school, David was a star athlete. He was a twelve-time Prep School Swimming All-American at Deerfield Academy in Deerfield, Massachusetts, and the National Prep School Champion in the 100-yard backstroke. He was also an All-American swimmer at Harvard University, his collegiate alma mater, where he earned academic honors before graduating in 1984.

It’s evident that from an early age, David Phillips has always been passionate about athletics.

He was also passionate about the concept of healing people, which is why he became a doctor. He earned a medical degree in 1989 from Wright State University School of Medicine in Dayton, Ohio, where he was elected to the prestigious national Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society.

“After graduating from medical school, I decided to go into emergency medicine,” Dr. Phillips recalls. “I had ‘shadowed’ some people in the emergency department and it was very exciting work – you’ve got 30 or 40 beds and 30 or 40 different diagnoses to deal with.”

So David followed his new passion and completed his residency in emergency medicine in 1991. But over the years, David’s passion for emergency medicine waned as his chosen career began to take an emotional toll. David realized that while he was busy taking care of other people, he wasn’t taking care of himself. That’s when he decided to make a major change in his life. Combining both of his passions for medicine and athletics, he went into sports medicine and hasn’t looked back since.

Dr. Phillips didn’t stop there. He began to train again and resurrected his own athletic career, qualifying for and competing in the 2005 Ironman World Championships in Hawaii. He has since been selected twice as a USA Triathlon All-American and qualified as a member of Team USA for the 2008 ITU World Ironman Triathlon Championships in Vancouver, British Columbia. Dr. Phillips didn’t stop there, either.

“I began working with a charitable community called the Getting2Tri Foundation (Getting2Tri.org) which provides physically challenged athletes with coaching, training, and mentoring in triathlon and its component sports,” he says. “One of the individuals I worked with there was Jason Fowler. Jason is a gifted athlete who won the wheelchair division of the Ironman World Championships in 2009. Jason truly represents what it means to ‘Live Life to the Plus+™.’ He’s an inspiration not only to my wife Heidi and me, but to everyone he meets.”

David believes that Jason’s story captures the very essence of what it means to Live Life to the Plus+.

“It doesn’t matter how far you fall,” he explains. “You can always pick yourself back up again and shoot for the stars, regardless of your field of endeavor.”
