Healthy Holiday Treats with Kids (in 20 minutes!)

I love it when I find an activity that’s easy for me and fun for my 4-year old son plus has the added bonus of teaching him a life skill. What more can a mom ask for?

These two recipes take about 20 minutes of hands-on time with 30 minutes or so to chill in the fridge or to bake in the oven. These treats are very nutrient dense and use only natural sweeteners.

Choco-Nut Balls

Vegan. Lactose Free. Gluten Free.

These balls are my favorite. They are sweetened with dates and have plenty of nuts and seeds for super protein power. For taste… we add in amazing cocoa powder with virgin coconut oil that make it truly heaven on earth without the guilt.

Ingredients

1 cup medjool dates

1 cup almonds

¾ hazelnuts

2 Tablespoons hemp seeds

2 Tablespoons chia seeds

2 Tablespoons cocoa powder (unsweetened)

2 Tablespoons coconut oil

Shredded coconut (optional design element)

Directions: Get the kids involved!

1.    With them, collect and measure all the ingredients into separate bowls

2.    Have them take the pits out of the dates

3.    Don’t worry if the kitchen is getting messy

4.    Set up your kitchen machine or blender (remind kids to pay attention)

5.    Place dates, almonds, hazelnuts, hemp seeds and chia seeds into the machine

6.    Have your child push the blender button to blend into a floury texture

7.    Place into a large bowl.

8.    Add in the coconut oil and cocoa powder. Mix until a dough forms

9.    Roll into mini balls using a tablespoon for size

10. If you love coconut… roll half of the balls in the shredded coconut ;-)))

11. Place in fridge to set for about an hour. Then ENJOY!

The kids can do this recipe from start to finish with your help, guidance and patience.
